This solid black walnut cottage dresser commode is a rare American cupboard or chest from the early 1800's with pinecone finials. The wood is thick and hand bench made, not like the later commodes mass produced. The two drawers are fully dovetailed front and back with chamfered bottoms as well as dovetails on top front. The bottom cupboard part has a sweet fancy scalloped interior shelf with its original early brass hook to hold one door, the left, shut and a narrow molding that snaps with slight overlap from the right door which is just a tweak off as you can see at the bottom but only from age and still closes snugly. The door below has a lock and I will include a key if I can find one in the estate that would work, it makes it easier to open, or you could just add a knob here. The interior is clean but early and original with no repairs, none necessary. Early hand made Square Nails are on large back boards. Lots of detail on this piece with scallops front and sides, a bracket base, and fancy panel door molding ~ It is a charming piece of Americana in belgian blue that looks like early paint and is checkered or crackled mostly across the top and worn and chippy in places with a primitively worn floral tole paint. Age of tole unknown, it has a textured feel, not smooth but very rustic sweet. It is such a versatile piece, decorative for a scandinavian swedish decor to early antique vintage cottage to primitive country to rustic. This would add a stunning charm to any room, from bath to child's bedroom to hallway, to a sweet cottage sideboard for storing dining tablecloths and silver. Glass knobs could be added to change the look a bit. It's that perfect in between size. It measures appx. 29" tall by 31" wide by 17" deep and is a very heavy piece but can still be boxed shipped via Fed ex. These small chests or cabinet pieces are very hard to find. Being sold from an estate.
Thanks for your interest! This chest is available for pick up or can be shipped Fed Ex. Email any questions! :-)
